Smart and green buildings course

 Our buildings must become ever smarter and greener. Do you want to know what are the solutions that make buildings smarter and greener? Do you want to create your own automated systems to harness solar energy, control light, temperature or humidity, and regulate the building’s energy consumption? If “yes”, take our Smart and Green Buildings course.

The course is intended for mechatronic/electrical/engineering  students (level 4)  and it will be held in the English language.

Lasting ten days, in Smart and Green Buildings course you learn:

  • principles of smart and green buildings
  • principles of Industry 4.0
  • technical vocabulary related to the topics
  • Shelly components for planning and building automated systems
  • practical solutions of automated solar systems, for lightening, heating and cooling of buildings.

The entire course is structured using the problem-based learning approaches, active learning method  and practical hands-on tasks.

The training also includes study visit to a business company, school lunches, “Meet and Greet” event and cultural activities in European Culture Capital Tartu 2024

Next training session: 5 – 18 April 2025 in Tartu

The participation in the program could be financed by Erasmus+ programme as mobility (VET learners traineeships in vocational institutions abroad).

Teacher Rasmus Saar has been a mechatronics teacher in VOCO for three years. He is an alumnus of Tartu VOCO, a graduate of the University of Tartu, and has furthered his knowledge and skills across several schools across Europe. He have had many experiences with Erasmus+ projects, including several pilot programmes with international students. His teaching style is practical and engaging, using real-life examples, and he is a keen to use problem-based learning methods.

The student:

  1. names key principles of Green Smart Buildings and describes the reasoning behind them on a basic level;
  2. works in a group using a second language (english) to communicate with other students from different countries in order to complete problem-based tasks;
  3. can name different components and technologies used in real-life applications of home and industrial automation;
  4. knows and describes the basic principles of Industry 4.0 (IoT, Big Data, etc.);
  5. simulates a simple working automation solution (setup and programming) using various Shelly devices (smart relays, motions sensors, Uni, temperature and humidity sensors, smart bulbs, smart plugs) and simple actuators (cooling fan, LED lights etc.) based on given description;
  6. creates and presents an idea of their own Green Smart system in english as a group, using the materials provided;
  7. understands and applies new technical vocabulary in english in their work process

The program costs 360€ per student and it includes:

  • Ten days training at our college and study visit(s) to a business company
  • School lunches
  • Welcome dinner and farewell snacks
  • Cultural activities – city sightseeing and culture programme in Tartu

The course fee can be financed by Erasmus+ programme as mobility (VET learners traineeships in vocational institutions abroad).
